The local GAA community is in mourning this week following the untimely death of Eoin (Eoinie) Farrell.

The final countdown has now commenced prior to the hosting of ‘Together for Hospice’, the National Hospice Movement’s Hospice Sunflower Days on-street collection which is returning to Athlone and Midlands region towns and villages this weekend on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11.

On Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11, local volunteers will be selling sunflower merchandise to raise vital funds for the South Westmeath hospice and specialist palliative homecare services.

Tributes have been paid to former Athlone councillor, Kieran Molloy, who passed away following an illness in the care of staff at the South Westmeath Hospice.

Due to public demand, Athlone Little Theatre will host an additional screening of 'Ann's Pub', the award winning 26-minute documentary by Swiss filmmaker Thabea Furrer, which was filmed at Flannerys, the landmark Sean Costello Street premises between 2017 and 2019.

Prominent local landscape artist, Anna Boles, has raised €2235 for the South Westmeath Hospice from the sales of her 2022 calendar.

Prominent landscape artist, Anna Boles, has launched her 2022 calendar, 25 percent from the sales of which will be donated to the South Westmeath Hospice.

Local Minister of State, Deputy Peter Burke, has implored the HSE and South Westmeath Hospice committee to immediately engage in “meaningful and progressive” discussion to resolve outstanding issues pertaining to the relocation of palliative care beds from the existing St Vincent’s Care Centre to the new Community Nursing Unit at Clonbrusk.

South Westmeath Hospice is one of 26 hospices nationwide affording full support to the ‘Virtual Sunflower Remembrance Garden’ initiative.
